Conaway Votes to Pass the Balanced Budget Amendment

Press Release

Date: April 13, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

Thursday, the House of Representatives voted on H.J.Res. 2, proposing a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution of the United States. Although the majority of the House of Representatives voted to pass this amendment by a vote of 233-184, it did not receive the two-thirds majority required to pass a Constitutional amendment. Congressman Mike Conaway (TX-11) released this statement following his vote in favor of the Balanced Budget Amendment:

"Our nation's debt is growing at an alarming and unsustainable rate. I have been a staunch advocate for the Balanced Budget Amendment throughout my time in Congress, because I believe that the best way to get our nation back on track is to use the same technique as American families across the country: not spending more money than we take in.

"Unfortunately, the majority of my Democrat colleagues do not share the concerns of Americans across our country and they would rather spend with abandon than make tough choices about what we can realistically afford as a nation. However, this will not stop Republicans from continuing to promote smart policies to get America's fiscal house in order. It's up to us to protect the America we know and love for future generations to come."
